The term browsing simply means hunting around in the files stored on your computer or on a floppy or CD or ZIP disk etc. It is a confusing process to many casual computer users. You can do no harm to anything on your computer by browsing the files. Lets take a look at this very typical browsing window. The one big difference with this browsing window is the Preview box. Each program may have a slightly different variation of the browsing window, but they all function the same.

#2 You click on this down arrow to open the drop down window. This is usually the first step in browsing. Here you can browse to a different hard drive or the floppy (A:) or the CD etc. #3 Shows the current open folder, indicated by the open folder picture. The same as #1. But here you can see where it is on your computer. In my example you can see that it is a sub folder of the (#4)AOL4 folder that is stored on the (#5)C: drive. #6 This is file types box. There are many different types of files on your computer. Not all programs can open all file types. This is a great feature because by clicking on #8 you open the drop down file types window and you can choose what type of file you want to look for. If you are looking for a JPG file you can click on that choice and only JPG files will be displayed in the current selected drive/folder window. (The big one in the middle). This can really reduce the clutter and confusion of having to look at all the file types. #7 This shows what file type you are currently looking at. The (*.*) is called the wild card option. The wild card displays all file types. Useful if you are not sure what type of file you are looking for but you know the name of the file. Also useful so you can see all the files/folders in any selected folder or drive. #9 This is the button to click once you have browsed to the file you want and have clicked on it. It will be displayed in the FILE NAME box that is partially coverd by hand #6 and 7. It is a good idea to practice browsing your files to get used to the process and to familiarize yourself with the folders/files on your computer and where they are stored. Click the browse button below and a browsing window called "choose file" or "upload file" will open up and you can practice "browsing" your files. Double-click on a file and it will appear in the box to the left of the browse button. It doesn't actually do anything, it's just a test so you can practice "browsing" if you want to.
