Shinobi Hardware Specs

Well, here is a little about the hardware used in Shinobi.

Shinobi is based on the Sega System 16 hardware (circa 1986). This was used in other games such as Altered Beast. Relatives are the System 18, which is a souped up System 16 with better sound and the Dual 68000 which has dual processors.

Here are the specs of the System 16:

  • Sound CPU: Sharp Z80B at 4Mhz
  • Sound: Yamaha YM2151 (FM Synth)
  • Sound: Yamaha YM3012 (FM Synth)
  • Sound: NEC D7759C (PCM and ADPCM)
  • RAM: 2x Toshiba TC5565APL-12
  • RAM: 2x Toshiba TC51832PL-12
  • RAM: 5x Toshiba TMM2115BP-10
  • RAM: 6x Toshiba TMM2018AP-35
  • Custom: SEGA 315-5195 Out Run/System 16 hw custom square ship (ic138)
  • Custom: SEGA 315-5196 System 16 hw sprite generator
  • Custom: SEGA 315-5197 Out Run/After Burner/System16 hw bg/fg tiles generator

In later years, as the System 16 was being retired, this hardware was modified for use in the Sega Genesis.
