Welcome to
for end users
This page is for
all of you who may be considering Linux for the desktop PC but have
been too scared to give it a go, or don't know what applications run
on it.
Linux has some
distinct advantages over other O/S's. The major one is cost. Most
applications including the operating system are FREE.
Below
is a list of applications that I have found to be great for end users
at home such as myself. Each one has a screen shot, so you know what
you will be getting before an installation.
To
find out more on each one, click on the image.

 KDE
is more than a window manager, I rate it at No.1
|
For the adventurous.
I used to run our 2 PC's at home on Win 95 with peer to peer
network setup. I still run my machine and my wife's on the
same network, but via a program called Samba.

 StarOffice
5 is a complete integrated Office application. A must have.
|
Samba lets Win 95/NT
login to a Linux box and map the drive as if it were
another Win 95/NT drive. The main reason I have done this is
to provide the Win 95 box a gateway to the internet via the
Linux box. The Linux box lets the Win 95 use ftp, telnet,
http, e-mail etc. This includes ICQ for Win 95.
This is done by ip-forwarding and
by ip-masquerading. This may be beyond the scope of most end
users, others will say "great - show me how".

 The
GIMP is similar to various Paint Shop type programs
|
|
|
 Wxftp
- almost the same as wsftp.
|
|
|
 LICQ
- Linux ICQ - works the same but not made by Mirabilis
|
|
|
 Corel
Word Perfect 8 Need I say any more ?
