Criminal dies in police custody

SONEPAT, April 5 — Sakreen, alias Netaji, leader of the Sheikh Bengali gang which was also known the Momin gang, died in police custody here yesterday. The victim was among the 17 members of the gang who had been arrested by the police in connection with the robbery committed in the house of Mr Ashok Chitkara, an official of the Haryana Financial Corporation on March 16. The gang members had also killed three other persons at Shadipur, Kabirpur and Fazilpur village on the same night. Sakreen, was discharged from the Civil Hospital on April 3 after being treated for a couple of days and taken to the local district jail. His condition became serious again and he was again taken to the hospital and was being taken to Medical College Hospital, Rohtak for further treatment. However, on the way he died. It is alleged that victim was tortured by the police. This is the second death of a criminal in police custody during the past fortnight.
