Man arrested in gang-rape case of widow

Chandigarh, January 22: THE UT Police today arrested Sanjay for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a widow on Sunday. A resident of Rajiv Colony in Panchkula, Sanjay was picked up by the police from the forest area behind the railway station today afternoon.

Sources said the police got a tip-off that Sanjay was hiding in the forest. Three other accused in the case have also been identified and the police are expected to arrest them soon, sources added.

The accused has reportedly confessed to his involvement. It is learnt that he has also stated that they had equally distributed among themselves the money which they had snatched from the widow and her father.

The 35-year-old widow, belonging to Old Panchkula, had alleged that she was raped on January 20 by two unknown persons.

Two other persons had also been involved, she had complained. The other two accused had overpowered her father with whom she was going to the railway station around 10.45pm on a bicycle.

The four accused had also robbed them of Rs 12,500 before fleeing, she had complained.

The woman had alleged that one of their assailants was being addressed as Sanjay by the other three accomplice.
