NRI robbed, strangled

Barana Khalsa (Karnal), January 24
A Sweden-based NRI was strangled after being robbed by unidentified persons here today morning. The local police recovered his body from bushes outside this village. A criminal case has been registered at the police station Butana. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the victim, identified as Inderjit Parmar (45), was a native of Padda village in Hoshiarpur district. He had come from Sweden and had landed at New Delhi around 2.30 a.m. He hired a taxi from the airport and was on his way to his native village when he was robbed and killed.

A senior official of the police told TNS that slips of airport clearance were recovered from the body which the deceased was identified. He had come to India to attend the wedding ceremony of his brother-in-law in Punjab. Parmar had gone to Sweden in 1975 along with his brother. He had settled down there and had established his own business. His mother and sister reportedly live at Chandigarh.

Further investigations revealed that the victim was carrying two briefcases, a handbag, at least £ 300 and about 200 grams of gold jewellery that he had purchased from Sweden for the wedding. The post-mortem report revealed that Parmar was strangled after being robbed. An investigation team was sent to New Delhi late in the evening to trace the taxi that Parmar hired and arrest the driver for further investigations.
