DHARUHERA(Rewari), Nov 27 — The Haryana police has been successfully discharging its duties in spite of the constraint of manpower. This was stated here today by the DGP, Mr S.P.S. Rathore, who was here to review the law and order situation. He told newspersons that the present strength of the force for patrol was about 35,000 whereas the ideal strength should be about 1.5 lakh. He, however, said the government was short of funds and the police was working admirably.
He said the Haryana Police had represented its case to the Finance Commission and sought aid of Rs 904 crore for the upgradation in man-power and for its modernisation. He said the commission had asked the Haryana Police to list the priorities for which it wanted central assistance.
Mr Rathore said he had effected a number of experiments to sensitise the force and to make it more effective, adding that. "My dream is to raise the level of the Haryana Police to that of the dreaded police in London". He stressed that the number of FIRs should not be taken as the index of the rate of crime. According to him, the FIRs would go up if the police acted sincerely registered cases.
According to him, his holding monthly durbars, appointing a DIG as public relation officer, making himself accessible to employees of any rank were some of the efforts towards injecting transparency. He said he would hold durbars at the zonal level and at the district headquarters.
He said he had directed officers that no women should be interrogated at police stations. The police would have to go to her house for the purpose. Also, any decision for police remand of any woman, could only be taken at the level of the Superintendent of Police concerned. A separate cell to deal with crimes involving woman had been created.
