Crime against women on the rise in Rohtak
ROHTAK, July 22 (From Bijendra Ahlawat)
The graph of crime against women in this district has gone up sharply in the past month. About 18 cases of dowry deaths, abduction, rape, molestation and murder were reported during the period. In the past week itself, as many as seven such cases were reported. Figures of the past four weeks have put a question mark on the claims of the authorities in this regard. Among the most heinous incidents to have rocked the district and the State during the month of June this year was the alleged abduction, rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl of Pehrawar village. The body of the victim was recovered from a canal after about one-and-a-half month. To review the deteriorating law and order situation here and in the neighbouring Jhajjar district, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) John V. George had a meeting of senior police officials held on May 29 last. He directed the police machinery to be more active and equip itself with the latest equipment to tackle the situation effectively. One look at the crime scene shows that cases of alleged dowry deaths top the chart. As many as six women were reportedly poisoned to death by their in-laws for not bringing enough dowry. Five cases of suicides by married women, mostly due to some kind of harassment by their family members or in-laws, were reported.
