Configuring Eudora light with shell access.

Follow this steps after you have installed Eudora Light .

Now, clicking on the Eudora icon will start this program. However, you have to configure Eudora for your SHELL account before you can use it.
After you start the program the first thing Eudora does is pop up a window called `Setting'. (Afterwards, click on the `Tools' - `Options' menu.) On left hand side there will be some icons.

Each of these icons is to be clicked and relative settings on right hand side are to be made.

Please note that the following information is specific to a VSNL Mumbai account. In other cities you will have to use appropriate IP addresses or your POP and SMTP servers.
Set up your configuration as follows.

  1. Getting started
    POP account: username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in
Real name: Your Name (input this as you want other people to see it in an email)
    Connection method: 'shell account access'.
  2. Personal Information
    POP account: username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in
Real name: Your Name (input this as you want other people to see it in an email)
Return address: username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in (your email address)
    Dialup username:'username'
  3. Hosts
    POP account: username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in
    SMTP: giasbma.vsnl.net.in
  4. Checking mail
    POP account: username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in
Check for mail every "10" minutes: In this instance Eudora will check whether you have received any new email every 10 minutes while you are connected. Our suggestion is that you leave this "0" so that you can initiate the checking of mail by going to File menu and clicking on Check mail.
    Select: "Send on check"
Check the box for save password, which will save your password and you won't have to key it again and again every time you check your mail.
If you check the next item, "Leave the mail on the server", then even after downloading the mail the mail will be left in your account at VSNL. Again our suggestion is to leave this box unchecked so your mail box at VSNL remains uncluttered.
    Select Authentication Style as "Passwords".
  5. Sending mail
Return address is to be put as "username@giasbma.vsnl.net.in".
SMTP server is to be put as "giasbma.vsnl.net.in".
The next box labeled "Immediate Send" should be unchecked. This will permit you to compose and queue the mail you are sending off line. Then when you connect up, you can go to File menu and click on "Send Queued Messages". Otherwise if you keep this item checked. When you compose off line each time you finish the message and press "Send" button, it will automatically log on and send the mail.
  6. Dialup
    Dialup username :'username'
    Phone number :'Isp phone number'
    Modem : 'select default' { you have to modify it }
how to change the default(changing default.mod).

    Baud rate,COM port,data bits,flow control,stop bits,parity:
Set as in your terminal software(hyper terminal or telix) or keep the defaults.

    Service Provider : ' Select default' { you have to modify it }
how to change the default (changing default.nav)

Show Trace Windows :ALWAYS check this box.

  7. Attachments
Leave all settings as they are (default).
  8. Fonts and display
Leave all settings as they are (default).
  9. General attention
Leave all settings as they are (default).
  10. Replying
Leave all settings as they are (default).
  11. Miscellaneous and Advanced networks
Leave all settings as they are (default).
Eudora is now set up. You may now use Eudora for your mail. You may send email and receive email using Eudora.
Note: Remember that all the above assumed a Mumbai account, and that's why giasbma.vsnl.net.in was used. Check the DNS Server list to see what exactly you should be using.
