I cannot insert the AC Adapter into the back of my Powerbook 190. It does
not fit for some reason even though the AC Adapter looks fine.

The plastic at the bottom of the display around the hinges of my Powerbook
190 is coming apart.

On my Powerbook 5300 when I have a PC Card modem downloading software and
I insert a floppy disk into the floppy drive the computer freezes up.

My Powerbook 5300 takes about 3 minutes longer to startup when running
off the AC adapter than off the battery alone.

I have noticed that some network devices intermittantly drop off so my
Powerbook 5300 can no longer see them on the network for no apparent reason.
The network has been checked out, and no one else in my office hooked up
to this same network has any network problems?
DISCUSSION
Apple has identified the causes for the issues you describe and has created
a Repair Extension Program to address them. This is NOT a product recall.
Rather, it is a program designed to resolve the issues described in this
article. There are no safety issues with these products.
Quality is a top priority at Apple, and these repair programs
address certain quality issues that have surfaced with these products.
Apple is putting these repair programs in place as part of the company's
goal to provide a high level of customer satisfaction.
ISSUES ADDRESSED
The Repair Extension Program for Powerbook 5300 and 190 series computers
addresses the following key quality issues:

Both PowerBook 5300 and PowerBook 190
-
The AC power connector on some systems can become loose or inoperative.

The display bezel and housing on some systems can crack at the hinge.
-
PowerBook 5300 only
-
Some systems may exhibit problems when accessing a device in the media
bay while using certain PC cards that draw higher levels of power.
-
Some systems take a long time to boot when plugged into AC power.
-
On some systems, devices intermittantly drop off LocalTalk networks.

REPAIRS INCLUDED IN PROGRAM
The Repair Extension Program will include some or all of the following,
as appropriate, for a particular computer:
-
As appropriate, update to most current version of system software: Mac
OS Version 7.5.2 w/Enabler 1.2.1. (or later)
-
As appropriate, update the logic board to include engineering changes implemented
as of April 22, 1996.
-
As appropriate, replace display housing to correct cracks in plastic.
-
As appropriate, add shielding to improve hard disk drive performance.
IMPORTANT NOTES
-
PC Card issues, hard drive response times and networking issues can occur
for reasons unrelated to the component problems described above. Any such
issues would not be covered by this Repair Extension Program.

If your computer is affected by any of the these specific issues identified
above, call 1-800-SOS-APPL (in the United States) or contact an Apple-authorized
service provider (outside the United States) to schedule your system for
repair. In some other countries, PowerBooks will be repaired by an authorized
service provider.

This program will remain in effect for 7 years.
