Hardware: The 1 meg chip upgrade

The 1 meg upgrade can be done to either the Pilot 1000 or the Pilot 5000. As is commonly known, memory size is the only difference between the two models. The 1 meg memory upgrade doubles the memory bus from 8 bits to 16 bits. This makes some operations (like memory access) twice as fast. It won't increase the speed of the CPU, so it won't make your Pilot exactly twice as fast. You can check the results for your self by using PilotMark from Darrin Massena. You can get it at Adam's Archive.
