The Pilot hardware is capable of displaying 8 color grayscale! The Palm OS only supports 2-colors (black and white), so that's all the applications get to use. The consensus seems to be that Palm was overly concerned with memory usage. Jean-Paul Gavini as written a demo (available at Adam's Archive) and a programming toolkit. Get the toolkit from his site, known simply as JPG's Pilot Page.

Christophe Richard correctly pointed out that the pilot hardware (MC68328) is capable of showing only 4 of these 8 colors at a time. The OS, alas, is still limited to 2 colors.
