I haven't yet mentioned that I was in the US Navy for a few years, other than the link you clicked on said "Pictures I took while in the Navy". I took so many pictures, it's hard to catagorize them, so it's pretty much random from here. For instance, here is a torpedo shot that I was surprised I got. Damn thing was so loud coming out of the tube, that I jerked, and the shutter snapped. I didn't even know I got the picture until I got the film back. It was a nice surprise.
I was a Gun Fire Control technician, also known as an FTG. This was my director/radar unit. I was one of 3 people that actually sat inside this box to help aim the 5" gun to hit it's target. Always got a birds-eye view of the shell hitting the target. That tube you see sticking out of the side runs all the way through the inside and out the other. It's about 11 feet long altogether and is the most powerful binoculers on the ship. This is called the rangefinder.
This little R2D2 looking thing is called Phalinx. It's used for surface to air protection. In essence, it's a gatling gun with a radar. A BIG gatling gun. It can track multiple targets, track it's own bullets and chop incoming missles right in half...and then go after the big pieces. Sounds like a big vacuum cleaner when it fires.

Who couldn't recognize Diamond Head? One of the better shots I got during our 3 day stay in Hawaii.
